Duo gear up for charity ride

Tim and Jason, both bike enthusiasts, will be riding Royal Enfield GT continentals from Durban to Cape Town to charity.

TWO classic bikes, beautiful scenery, an epic adventure from Durban to the Mother City are what two local lads will be experiencing when they set off on their 2 200km trip on 26 December.

The duo Tim Mingay, of Durban North, and Jason Mets, of Glenwood, are completing the journey for the House of Love and Hope (HOLAH).

The non-profit organisation offers a secure and loving environment to babies in need until such time that a permanent home can be found.

They hope their café racer adventure will raise awareness and funds for the NPO.

The five day charity ride was given the appropriate moniker 031 to 021. Tim said he proposed the idea to Jason over a can of beer.

“We’d talked about a trip based around the motorbikes, but also attaching a worthy cause to it. HOLAH was an obvious choice for me because of the great work they do,” said Tim.

“Café racers would race between café’s and in order to win, they would have to reach the 100kmph mark, which is known as the ton. We’ve taken that principle and we’re trying to get 100 people to donate a R100 every month to the charity by the end of our five day trip.”

The trip starts in Durban and ends at the Golden Gate National Park. The intrepid duo’s journey then moves on to Stilfontein, Jeffreys Bay and Stilbaai before arriving in Cape Town on 30 December.

“The most exciting bit about this trip is when we arrive in Cape Town on New Year’s Eve we will be joined by a group of like-minded bikers who will accompany us into the city,” Tim said.

Tim and Jason, both bike enthusiasts, will be riding Royal Enfield GT continentals, bikes not normally known for long distance travelling.

“I have a few apprehensions about the trip. Café racer bikes weren’t meant for long distances and our first trial ride to Ballito didn’t go to well. We were caught out in the rain and our bikes gave us a little bit of trouble.

“Having said that, we’ve been riding longer distances to fine tune the bikes and expose the bikes to the different elements and get used to riding longer distances. Our first trip is 400km, so it’s going to be quite a challenge. But I’m looking forward to the road ahead and raising funds for such an awesome cause,” Jason said.
