WATCH: Gateway shoppers shocked

Today marks a year since Nelson Mandela’s death yet his presence was felt in uMhlanga when hundreds burst out in song to salute him.

A 200-strong ensemble of Durban choristers delighted lunchtime shoppers at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping in uMhlanga yesterday with a flash mob performance to mark the passing of former president Nelson Mandela. The mega choir’s tribute included a medley of Christmas carols ahead of the four-day Old Mutual National Choir Festival finals taking place in Durban this weekend.

Four top choirs from the Durban area, such as the Claremont Community Choir, Durban Serenade Choral Society, Prince Mshiyeni Choir and SA Singers, combined their voices to bring power to the message.

The mass choir performed Asimbonanga (Johnny Clegg and Savuka, Something Inside So Strong (Labi Siffre) and the popular carol, Joy to the World.
