Gangnam Style breaks YouTube counter

More than two years after it swept across the internet, Psy's Gangnam Style music video has amassed more than two billion views. This has prompted YouTube to upgrade its counter to accommodate for more than nine quintillion views.

TWO years after the world was forever changed by a little known man doing a weird dance that he called Gangnam Style,  the catchy lyrics and iconic galloping dance moves have officially broken the YouTube counter.

The music video featuring the South Korean singer,  Psy, has exceeded YouTube’s view limit, forcing  the site to upgrade its counter, so that people could continue to watch the uber popular video.

The video sharing site said on Monday (1 December) that the music video was one of the first to have exceeded two billion views. In fact it had exceeded the site’s counter limit – a 32-bit integer- or 2 147 483 647 views.

The coding therefore had to be updated to accommodate a 64-bit integer, which has increased the view limit to 9 223 372 036 854 775 808 – pronounced as nine quintillion, two hundred and twenty-three quadrillion, three hundred and seventy-two trillion, thirty-six billion, eight hundred and fifty-four million, seven hundred and seventy-five thousand, eight hundred and eight.

In addition to the hefty number of views the video has also amassed more than eight million ‘likes’ and a little more than one million ‘dislikes’.

The second most viewed video on YouTube is teen heart throb, Justin Bieber’s Baby – it had garnered a mere 1 117 687 593 views.
