Woman raped in Virginia bushes

Another violent attack on a woman rocks Durban North during one of the biggest anti-abuse campaigns of the year.

A 40-year-old man has been arrested for the alleged rape of a woman in the Virginia bushes near Margaret Maytom Avenue. It’s believed the man, who was under the influence of alcohol, dragged the woman into the bushes and raped her. The incident occurred on Saturday (29 November) at about 8pm.

The rape comes just days after the launch of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.

“We have established the two people involved were vagrants and that the man had asked for sex and became forceful when the woman refused. He then pushed her into the bushes and raped her,” said Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North station.

“We believe the 40-year-old was under the influence of alcohol.”

The man is expected to appear in court on Thursday. This is the second violent attackĀ  in the past two months following the brutal hacking of a woman at an informal settlement near Glen Hills in November.
