Dashing Crusaders host ‘mo’mentous fundraiser

Crusaders host Movember fundraiser for Highway Hospice.

THE Crusaders Canoe Club hosted a Movember fundraiser last week in the aid of raising funds for the Highway Hospice. Hundreds of members, some burdened with itchy noses and irritable top lips, and some tired of paying lip service said they hoped to keep the longstanding tradition of growing their moustaches going.

Mo Bros, as participants are called, agree to grow and groom a Ron Swanson-worthy ‘stache’ to create testicualr Cancer awareness health and to raise funds for a good cause.

Rod Bowes, chairman of the club, said the annual fundraiser had run for the past five years.

“On the last Thursday of November every year we host a fundraiser. Members come out and paddle on the uMgeni River and throughout the month we’ve been selling headbands for R50. All the proceeds go towards the Highway Hospice. We also have a prize giving for four different categories in the Movember look, namely ‘Main Mo’, ‘Steamy Mo’, ‘Ginga Mo’ and ‘No Mo’. I’m in the running for some of those categories so I’ve decided to sit this one out,” Bowes chuckled.

“There is also a serious aspect to this ‘Mo’vement which is raising cancer awareness. My father has testicular cancer and Movember is more than just being about a hairy upper lip but its also a big proponent of shedding awareness for prostate cancer and testicular cancer,” he said.

He added the turnout and support from the club members was fantastic.
