Edmonstone suspect set to appear in court

One of the men believed to be involved in the murder of uMgeni Park resident, Stephen Edmonstone, will make his first appearance at the Durban Magistrate's Court today.

THE man arrested in connection with the murder of uMgeni Park resident, Stephen Edmonstone, is set to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today.

Police managed to track down and arrest the man on Monday, 24 November.

Fingerprints lifted from the point of entry at the crime scene lead investigating officers to the identity of the suspect. W/O Lutchman Singh, communications officer of the Greenwood Park SAPS, said, “Through the fingerprints we were able to identify one of the suspects. Detectives later received information regarding the whereabouts of the suspect and subsequently arrested him.”

Evidence mounted as the police were able to match the suspect’s fingerprints to prints found at several other crime scenes. He is a known criminal, said Singh.

In September, Northglen News reported that police struggled to lift fingerprints  from one of the weapons recovered at the scene. The weapon had been dumped into the swimming pool. “The firearm was of little value to the investigation. No fingerprints could be lifted from the weapon and we could not establish, through ballistics, whether the weapon had been used in any other crimes,” he said.

Police believe that two men were involved in the murder. The second suspect is still at large.

Edmonstone was shot and killed in August. According to police, the suspects entered the property through the bathroom window, and began assaulting Edmonstone’s partner, Alvin Meyer. The 63-year-old went to investigate when  he heard the commotion, and confronted the men, who shot him three times.

The suspects grabbed a laptop before fleeing the scene. They were picked up by a getaway vehicle.
