Damsels leave Knights in distress

The bout saw Durban's Derby Knights take on Gauteng's Slam Damsels.

HISTORY was made at the APN Portuguese Sports Club which played host to the first inter-provincial Roller Derby bout on the African continent. It was also the first time a Roller Derby team from C-Max (the Johannesburg league) played a match against Durban Derby team. The event was also a fundraiser for Team ZA, the first team from the continent of Africa to compete in a Roller Derby World Cup.

The bout saw the Derby Knights take on Gauteng’s Slam Damsels. The final score went the way of Damsels who closed out the game 323-49.Szerdi Nagy (Julia Sieze-Her), one of the members of Durban Derby said getting to skate against one of the teams that started Roller Derby in South Africa was a huge honour and learning experience for the team.

“The Durban team was made up of skaters from different teams and from all levels of derby so skating against a team that has just come out of their home season and know each other backwards was always going to be a challenge.

“Some of their girls have been skating for four or five years and our newest skater for less than 10 months. That being said, the Slam Damsels were way stronger and more game experienced, but we knew that going in,” she said.

Nagy thanked the crowd who turned out for the event and said through various fundraising initiatives they had managed to raise more than R10 000 for Team ZA who will be taking part in their first Roller Derby World Cup.

“The support has been phenomenal. If anyone still wants to donate anything small, they can visit www.gofundme.com/8etb18,” she said.
