Cash in transit robbers nabbed after shootout

Bullets fly on North Coast Road at Caltex Petrol Station.

FOUR armed men attempted to rob a G4S security guard as he was unloading cash cases at the Caltex Petrol Station on Chris Hani Road (North Coast Road) this morning.

But their attempts were foiled by police who were just metres away from the scene. The brazen robbers were trying to carry out a cash-in-transit heist   across the road from the Greenwood Park SAPS detective’s branch. The robbery took place at about 9.30am.

This is the second armed robbery that has occurred just metres away from the  detective’s branch following a shootout at the Housewives’ Market in June.

According to Marshall Security’s Tyron Powell, the men, were caught unaware by the police officers. There was an exchange of  gunfire and three suspects fled on foot.

“The suspects arrived in a Citi Golf and held up the security guard. They were then confronted by the police and a shootout ensued. One of the suspects who was waiting in the vehicle was apprehended.

“Two more robbers were caught hiding behind Bluff Meat Supply while the final suspect was found in the bushes on the corner of North Coast and Rinaldo Road,”  Powell said.

Two firearms and the cash case has been recovered.

The incident comes three months after a cash in transit heist at Hyper By The Sea saw robbers make off with R395 000.
