Shootout suspects hijacked vehicle at The Crescent

A 31-year-old woman and her family were hijacked by the men involved in a shootout with police yesterday.

MORE details have emerged from Thursday’s high speed chase and shootout between hijackers and police which ended on Kubu Avenue (just off Queen Nandi Drive). The VW Golf which the suspects were using was hijacked at the Crescent Shopping Centre.

According to police, the suspects hijacked a 31-year-old woman and her family. The men were wearing balaclava’s and blue overalls at the time of the incident.

Police recovered an AK 47 rifle, a pistol and 40 live rounds of ammunition. The two suspects were arrested and injured in the shootout and are between the ages of 25 and 32.

They have been charged with attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The suspects will appear at the Verulam Magistrates’ Court as soon as they are released from hospital. The seized firearms will be sent for ballistics testing to ascertain if they had been used in the commission of any other crimes in the country.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant Mmamonnye Ngobeni, applauded Flying Squad members for the seizure of the firearms and the arrest of the criminals.

“We are confident that the recovery of these firearms will assist us in solving a lot of murder and attempted murder cases that we are investigating and these arrests will also solve many armed robbery cases that had occurred in the Durban and its surrounding areas,” she said.
