uMhlanga hijacking leads to shootout

Brazen hijackers open fire on police using AK-47s in attempted getaway.

TWO suspects have been arrested and wounded after a shootout ended outside a logistics company on Kubu Avenue (off Queen Nandi Drive) at about 1.30pm. Details are still sketchy at this stage but it’s alleged three men in a red Golf hijacked a vehicle in the uMhlanga area.

Their attempted to get away which led to a high speed chase and shootout between members of the Greenwood Park SAPS and the Flying Squad. In their haste to getaway the suspects crashed into a truck outside a logistics company.

The men were armed with AK-47s and a 9mm. Greenwood Park SAPS spokesman, W/O Lutchman Singh, said police were still on scene and could only confirm that there was a shootout.

It’s believed one other suspect is still on the loose. The road is blocked off and traffic is currently backed up. Alternative routes are advised.

The hijacking and shootout occurred just a week after a similar incident on Kenneth Kaunda Drive (Northway).
