Foreigner in M4 crash yet to be identified

Authorities are struggling to identify the driver of the Nissan Tida that was involved in Saturday's M4 crash.

POLICE have yet to identify the man who was killed on Saturday when his car collided with that of the five uMhlanga students.

The students, Shaylan Moodley, Luke Naidoo, Sahish Daya (all aged 20), and brothers Kapil (20), and Sanvir Juggath (16), were travelling in a white Mercedes-Benz C Class when their vehicle collided with a Nissan Tida.

All six of the commuters died in the accident. But a few minutes ago Metro Police spokesman, Eugene Msomi, said they were struggling to identify the man travelling in the Nissan Tida because he was not from South Africa. “We are still investigating and we think he was a foreigner and that is why it is taking longer to identify him.”

According to media reports the group was socialising on Florida Road when one of the members pulled out a a firearm, and Metro Police reportedly received a complaint and dispatched two vehicles to the scene.

When Metro police arrived on scene the driver of the Mercedes sped off and a high speed chase ensued. It is believed that the Mercedes was travelling on the wrong side of the highway when it collided with the Tida. Both the vehicles instantly burst into flames. Two other vehicles were also involved in the accident.

Once the fire had been extinguished paramedics assessed the occupants of the primary vehicles, however, the occupants had succumbed to their severe injuries, said Rescue Care spokesman, Garrith Jamieson. The two injured passengers were stabilised and transported to a nearby hospital.
