Unlock Facebook’s emoticons

Be more emotive on Facebook with a list of emojis that can be incorporated into your posts.

SINCE the dawn of the internet and social media there have been emoticons, also known as emojis, used to help people convey their messages.

In 1971, psychology professor, Albert Mehrabian’s research determined that 55 per cent of people’s messages are communicated through body language. The other two elements includes words and tone of voice.

In face to face interactions people use all three of these elements to express an overall message, but electronic communications eliminates two of the elements – tone of voice and body language.
This can lead to miscommunication or a misinterpretation of a persons message.

That is why emojis have become so popular. A winking face can easily express that the message was mean sarcastically. Personalisation has also popularised the emojis. In a world were one has to compete with thousands of other posts, messages and information everyone is utilizing every tool to make their messages stand out.

Facebook is no exception to the emoji trend, and while many people are aware of the typical smiley, winking and heart emojis, few are aware of the vast amount of emoticons that are at their disposal. A simple Google search will reveal thousands of websites with the codes that can be used to unlock these colorful images, which can be used in posts and chats.
Unfortunately, Facebook has forbidden the use of symbols in one’s profile name.
