Suspect commits suicide, victim’s family speaks out

The mourning daughter of Kistomma Andee said the untimely death of a man believed to be involved in the brutal murder of her mother did not bring her and the rest of her family any closure.

THE suicide of a murder suspect at the Greenwood Park Station has prompted response from the alleged victim’s family.

Nita Jacob, the daughter of Kistomma Andee, who was murdered last year spoke to the Northglen News. She said the death of the man accused of killing her 61-year-old mother had brought “no relief”.  “It hasn’t brought us any closure. There are still many questions left unanswered. We would have wanted justice to be served, as she did not deserve to die that way,” she said.

According to Jacob, her mother was a kind, strong woman who took care of a lot of people. “We are all still struggling to come to terms with what happened. I try to  remain strong, because I feel that  if I break down her memory will be lost. None of us will ever be the same,” she added.

The 25-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday after he failed to appear at a court hearing. On Wednesday afternoon (12 November) police officers at the station were met with a grisly sight when the body of the suspect wash found hanging from his cell’s window burglar guards. It is believed that a shoe lace was used as a noose. He had appeared at the  Durban Magistrates’ Court earlier that day.

W/O Lutchman Singh, acting spokesman for the Greenwood Park SAPS, confirmed that the Phoenix man was one of three suspects believed to be involved in Andee’s murder. One of the suspects is the deceased suspect’s girlfriend and the other is the former lover of Andee.

All three suspects were arrested in January, but later in the year were released on bail. The deceased suspect and his girlfriend had absconded from their next hearing, and were being hunted down by police before Tuesday’s arrest. The woman is still at large.

Andee, a Redhill resident, was violently strangled to death in her home with a cord. Her body was later discovered by family members, after her daughter was unable to get hold of her via telephone.

An inquest docket has been opened for investigation at the Greenwood Park Police Station regarding the alleged suicide, and police will continue to investigate Andee’s murder.
