Municipal officials dig up concerns

A Somerset Park resident has raised concerns regarding a massive hole that he claims was dug and left open by municipal officials.

A MASSIVE hole in Tamarind Close,  Somerset Park have raised concern among residents.

The hole, which was dug by municipal officials in order to repair a leak has been left unattended for more than four weeks.

A resident, who brought the issue to the attention of the Northglen News who wished to remain anonymous, said he was initially impressed when he reported the leak to eThekwini.

“They arrived the very next day and worked until 10pm to repair the leak. The next morning I noticed that the hole was left uncovered. I left it about a week, assuming that they had left it open to ensure that the leak had been repaired properly,” he said.

To date no one has returned to inspect the hole or the repair, and there have been no barriers or warning placed in the vicinity to warn pedestrians of the cavity.

“It is a major hazard, as someone could easily fall in. Water has also collected in the hole and has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes,” added the resident.

What’s more, in the last five years the same pipe has leaked on several occasions, according to the resident. “Municipal officials have been sent at least once every two months to come and sort out the leaks, but it is never fixed properly,” said the irate resident.

Municipal Spokesperson, Thabo Mofokeng, said that he was unaware of the issue, but would escalate an investigation.
