uMgenui businesses plagued by criminals

Authorities have warned that there has been a recent spike in business robberies in the Umgeni Park district. Business overs are urged to take additional precautions.

BUSINESS robberies have spiked in the uMgeni Park and surrounding areas in recent weeks, warned Lt Elvis Naidoo, of the Greenwood Park SAPS.
The criminals are targeting the business premises at night, robbing the company of computer and office equipment as well as audio visual aids.
“Owners are urged to safeguard their premises by increasing security. Ensure that the property is well lit, an alarm system is activated each night and security cameras are monitoring activity on various sites to deter criminals,” he said.

Additional tips for security guards:
– Exercise
– Take record of the description and registration number of any suspicious vehicles
– Do not confront suspicious individuals or vehicles
– If criminals are spotted breaking into a premises calmly vacate to a secure location and contact the police immediately
– Only contact the owner and security company after alerting police
– Do not disturb the crime scene if the criminals have fled
– If confronted by armed assailant comply with their instructions and do not resist

Durban North SAPS spokesperson, Lt Raymond Deokoran, said that they had not had any recent reports of business robberies.
