Helicopter lands on M41, airlifts patient

A pedestrian was critically injured on the M41 in uMhlanga.

A PEDESTRIAN was struck by a truck while crossing the M41 in uMhlanga (near the Millennium Bridge) at about 2.30pm. Traffic was severely disrupted as paramedics closed off the busy road in order to accommodate a helicopter which airlifted the man to hospital.

According to Crisis Medical spokesman, Neil Powell, the man suffered severe cranial injuries. “The pedestrian’s head hit the right side mirror of the truck. The impact knocked him out and paramedics had to intubate the man. He suffered serious abdominal trauma, a broken leg and fractured skull.

“We had to close down the M41 going in the direction of uMhlanga because of the severity of his injuries. We had no option but to airlift the patient. He was taken to Albert Luthuli Hospital and his condition is still critical,” Powell said.
