Girl (3) sexually abused by intoxicated ‘family friend’

A 'family friend' is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court tomorrow, after he allegedly sexually abused a 3-year-old girl.

“I WAS drunk”, that was the explanation a mother was given after her three-year-old daughter was sexually assaulted in Sea Cow Lake last Friday. The mother, who cannot be named to protect the child’s identity, alleged that the suspect (50) approached her the following day in an attempt to apologise, saying that he was drunk and had no valid excuse for his actions.

Swift action by police ensured that the suspect was arrested on Saturday. He is expected to appear at the Durban Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, said Lt Elvis Naidoo,  Greenwood Park SAPS spokesperson.

The incident occurred at approximately 8.30pm, after the suspect, and the child’s father and uncle arrived at the child’s home on Gum Tree Road. They had been carousing at a local shebeen and continued drinking in the same room in which the toddler was playing, police said.

According to the mother, her traumatised daughter approached her later in the evening,  and told her that the man had sexually assaulted her while her father and uncle were asleep.

The mother’s whereabouts during the assault is unknown.
