Awesome foursome bowl to victory

Local bowlers win Port Natal Fours title.

IT would seem that literary and sport world and even Hollywood have a penchant for odd numbers. For example you have The Famous Five, The Magnificent 7, The Three Musketeers, it would seem the appearance of any even number was an oddity or a bad omen. However, one quartet who have recently hit the headlines can now stake a claim for a new moniker, the Awesome Foursome.

They are made up of Northlands Bowling Club members Pam Wolstenholm, Pam Donegan, Denise Prescott and Herel Holberg who recently clinched the Port Natal Ladies Fours title.

It was the club’s fourth title since 1955 and its second in three years. The team skippered by Holberg were victorious in the final against last year’s champions Durban Bowling Club beating them 19-17.

“It was only when we got to the semi-finals that I thought we had a chance,” explained Prescott. “Pam(Donegan) and I had won the trophy back in 2011. And this year’s team were just as good.”

For Wolstenholme, the fours title was made even sweeter by her triumphs earlier this year where she won the Northlands Bowling Club ladies singles title for the sixth time, securing her third back to back title and the Champions of Champions cup which she won for the second time.

“Conditions weren’t easy but we played to the best of our abilities. It was a close victory in the end but we were absolutely thrilled,” Wolstenholme said. “We had a great skip who guided us through the competition.”

“We certainly didn’t expect to win but it was the cherry on the top of a great year for the club,” Donegan said.
Holberg listening intently to the responses of the Awesome Foursome said the group listened well.

“The team was fantastic and they were a delight to skip. Our goal is to train hard and defend the title and come next year, pull off the double,” she said.
