Henri triumphs in Korea

Local triathlete wins his first ever race on ITU circuit.

DURBAN North’s Henri Schoeman secured his first International Triathlon Union (ITU) title leading almost the entire race at the Tongyeong ITU Triathlon World Cup. The USA’s Ben Kanute and Tommy Zaferes were with Schoeman all the way and also mount their very first ITU podium.

However, it was the cherry on the top of an incredible season for Schoeman who clinched his first ever ITU World Cup, winning in a time of 1:48:15.

The Commonwealth Games silver medallist began the race with an impressive swim posting the fastest time of the day with 16:19 and broke away with a pack of five in the cycle race. He ended the race winning by a comfortable margin.

“It’s unbelievable. I feel so great. It’s fantastic. I was feeling great the whole run. On the last lap when I looked over and I had a huge gap, that’s the best feeling in the world because then you can win comfortable,” said Schoeman.

The 23-year-old took to Instagram after the race saying it was ‘perfect way to end the season’.

The Tongyeong triathlon was the last of the ITU World Series with Olympic qualification points up for grabs this season.
