Blue Lagoon taxi chaos returns

Last year the long-distance taxi's constant partying at Blue Lagoon also outraged uMgeni Park residents.

RESIDENTS at uMgeni Park, across from Blue Lagoon, were recently forced to once again endure the unpleasant festivities of long-distance taxis, who set up a temporary rank in the Lagoon’s parking bay.

Hours of excessive noise, littering, public alcohol consumption and urination were just some of the inconveniences residents witnessed on their doorstep for the past two weeks. Locals were shocked and outraged at the amount of broken beer bottles, boxes and plastic bags strewn across the parking lot.

It was reported that at times the jolly travelers started their merriment at 6pm in the evening and partied straight through the night until the early hours of the morning.

“This is unacceptable behavior. It is shocking that the taxi drivers and their passengers fail to show the local residents any respect,” said ward 36 councillor, Shaun Ryley. He confirmed that although the party-goers were not breaking any laws by stopping in the parking bay, they were violating bylaws by causing noise pollution, and drinking in public.

“I urge residents to report such behavior to Metro Police and to ask for a reference number, so that the progress can be traced,” he added.

In October last year residents battled the exact same problem, and received very little response and sympathy from Metro Police. Some residents complained that they suffered for three consecutive weeks, without proper sleep.

Senior Superintendent Eugene Msomi failed to provide the Northglen News with comment by the time of publication.
