The new health craze, butter in your morning coffee

It may make for the creamiest, most satisfying cup of coffee you’ve ever had but it's certainly weird.

THERE’S a new trend going around that may forever change the way you drink coffee or make you cringe or become skeptical to even attempt what we are about to tell you.

Putting butter in your cup of joe is the new health craze that’s sweeping the globe but it’s not as odd as you may think. Adding butter to hot drinks is a longstanding tradition in countries like Tibet and Ethiopia.

The extra fat, from Yak butter, is regarded as a nourishing source of fuel to help power a hard days work.

The essential ingredient is not plain butter, but unsalted butter made from grass-fed cows. Two tablespoons of it goes into two cups of coffee along with one or two tablespoons of MTC oil, which is found naturally in coconut oil.

Dave Asprey, entrepreneur and founder of Bulletproof coffee started the growing health craze. The Silicon Valley investor said putting butter in your coffee would ‘jump start’ your body with the ‘right fats’ which in turn can help boost your energy.

“I learned about the power of butter at 18 000 feet of elevation near Mt Kailash in Tibet. I staggered into a guest house from the -10 degree weather and was literally rejuvenated by a creamy cup of yak butter tea.

“So, I use the lowest toxin, highest performance coffee there is (I know, because I created it and tested it!) I brew it, and then I blend unsalted, grass-fed butter into it, along with an extract of coconut oil that improves brain energy. It makes for the creamiest, most satisfying cup of coffee you’ve ever had. It will keep you satisfied with level energy for six hours if you need it, and because I’m having it for breakfast, I’m programming my body to burn fat for energy all day long,” Asprey said.
