uMhlanga’s Carey mixes it up with MasterChef contestant

NGN talks to Carey Glover about her time on the Hayden Quinn Show which aired recently on SABC 3.

WONDER Woman, Batgirl, She Hulk, Katniss Everdeen and Carey Glover, all have one thing in common. They are all heroines but only one of them is real. In 2011, the 14-year-old made waves after diving in to save the lives of five people who were drowning. It was the

Our Lady of Fatima pupil’s very first day as a lifeguard on Umhlanga Rock’s main beach. Her quick thinking helped save lives on the fateful day, and soon after she was announced as one of four finalists for the Centrum Guardian project. The Centrum Guardian project recognises and rewards acts of courage and self-sacrifice.

The matriculant was recently called up to film an episode with MasterChef Australia contestant, Hayden Quinn. She was interviewed as part of the show where Hayden cooked at the uMhlanga lifeguard station. Carey discusses the incident that saw her nominated as a finalist who assists Hayden with a fish curry.

“I was really excited. My mom and I love the MasterChef series and we were both huge Hayden fans. It was just an awesome experience,” Carey laughed.

The matriculant who has featured on SABC’s Expresso said she wasn’t nervous.

“I wasn’t nervous just a little star struck, but it all went well. He asked me a few questions about what happened while he cooked. The fish curry was a bit spicy but was really delicious,” she explained.

She was featured in the season finale of the show which aired on SABC 3 on Monday.

Carey’s heroic rescue

FOR those unfamiliar with Carey’s story, it was her first day of active lifeguard duty. After reporting to her squad leader for the day, Glover and the other squad members set up lifeguard arenas in front of two bathing areas on uMhlanga’s beach.

Her squad leader was pointing out potential problem areas when he spotted five people being swept away by a strong rip current. The squad leader ran into the water.

“‘I decided to go after him. Five people were too much for him to cope with so I grabbed a torpedo bouy and assisted a girl who was part of the group. I tried to calm her down and gave her instructions as I brought her safely to shore. I didn’t think it was a big deal and then a few months later I found out I was nominated for the Centrum Guardian project,” she said.
