Female accomplice gets away after Avoca robbery

A foot pursuit leads to arrest of two suspects.

THE quick thinking from an off duty Greenwood Park police reservist saw the arrest of two burglars who had robbed a house on Tasneem Crescent in Avoca just hours ago.

Warrant officer Selven Chetty said he was getting ready for work when he noticed a red Toyota Corrola with five people acting suspiciously.

“There were four men and one female. They had cool drinks sitting in the car and were pretending to act like they were just chilling. Three of the men then jumped out of the vehicle and started walking towards a house down the road.  The car then drove off.

“They vaulted over the front gate and rushed a domestic worker who was at home at the time.  They slapped her a few times and asked her for the jewellery, cash and laptops. I called the Greenwood Park SAPS station and waited for back-up to arrive before approaching the suspects. I  wasn’t sure if the men were armed or not,”  he said.

When Chetty and officers from the station approached the three men, they split into two groups.

“We managed to chase after two of the suspects and arrest them. The third suspect managed to escape with a number of goods stolen from the house,” he said.

Chetty added that the two suspects in the car had parked at a supermarket nearby and looked to have been communicating with the other suspects via cellphone.

“Once we apprehended the suspects, the duo in the car drove off. We later found it abandoned in KwaMashu Hostel,” he said.
