Police officer threatened and assaulted

A Durban North police officer found himself at the receiving end of an assault at the weekend.

A POLICE officer who confronted a man for speeding down a residential road, was allegedly threatened and sworn at.

The scene occurred on Stanhope Place in Briardene at about 2pm on Saturday. Warrant officer, Kenneth Chinnah said he was at  his church with the pastor and his family when he heard a vehicle being drag raced on the the road.

“I went out and saw a man revving his engine and then taking off at high speed. I told him I was a policeman and he couldn’t speed like this on a residential road. I told him it was dangerous and that there was an informal settlement just 50 meters up the road and children who use the road often and that I was waiting for other people to arrive at the church. He even spun his tyres in my presence and sped off. He then came back to his auto repair shop and I heard shouting and the driver and owner of the shop saying he was going to hit me. He swore at me when he said this.”

Next Chinnah said about 15 men began walking towards him, one of the men even picked up a long wooden plank.

“I was fearful an altercation was about to take place. I drew my weapon and shouted police. My son and wife, ran down to try and calm the situation down. The man then said I was hiding behind my wife and badge and I was not man enough to fight him one on one. He again swore at me.

“I feel this matter should be taken to highest authority. I was doing my job to protect the community and I came under attack which could have resulted in injury or fatality. This is unacceptable,” he said.

Chinna laid a charge of assault at the Greenwood Park Police Station shortly after the incident.
