Criminals use scaffolding to enter home

Police have warned residents not to leave items that could be used to commit crimes lying in their gardens.

FORCEFUL and unabashed thugs used building scaffolding from a neighboring property to break-into a house on Ridge Road in uMhlanga on Thursday.

Several robbers managed to use the scaffolding to gain access to the property through a window on the upper level.

According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesperson for the Durban North SAPS, one of the intruders forced open and climbed through the window. He then proceeded to unlock a door from the inside, which had the keys hanging on the lock.

Once inside the property the robbers ransacked the home and fled with more than R100 000 worth of electronic items. “This is the first incident where the criminals used items lying around to gain access to the property in recent months, but it is generally a common occurrence,” he said.

Deokaran believes that Thursday’s incident  was an opportunistic crime. “The opportunity presented itself, and the criminals used it to their advantage,” he said. He urged resident to stash all items that could be used to break into a property before leaving one’s property or before nightfall.

No one was home at the time of the incident.
