Man arrested for impersonating attorney
A man allegedly strolled into the Durban North police station posing as an attorney and asking to speak to his 'clients' who had been arrested two weeks ago for stealing a boat valued at R250 000.
A 30-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested after allegedly impersonating an attorney. Khalid Osman, a Verulam resident, is alleged to have walked into the Durban North SAPS saying he was there to consult two of his clients who were being held at the station’s cells. The men were arrested more than a week ago for stealing a luxury boat from Prestondale.
Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, said police became suspicious of the man after he was unable to produce any identification. What’s more the the investigating officer said he had previously met the attorney acting on behalf of the men in custody.
“The detective knew the client’s representative and questioned Osman, who insisted he was an attorney. After further questioning the man then claimed he was acting on behalf of another attorney.
“He then admitted that he had been lying and was promptly arrested. He was charged with defeating the ends of justice,” he said.
Osman appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday and has been released on bail.
