8 ways to stay pool safe

SPRING is in the air and with the rising temperatures comes the need to relax and play in the swimming pool. 

But while having fun in the sun might seem like a carefree adventure, it is important to remain vigilant are careful, as submersions and drownings can happen quickly, especially when it involves children. 

Safeguarding your child during the summer months can be best accomplished by following eight easy steps. 

1. Adult supervision is regarded as the primary form of prevention. Try to ensure that there are always adults supervising children playing in the pool.

2. Cover and fence pools, to prevent children from accessing them when adult supervision in not available. Warn your children not to approach the pool unless they have permission and is being supervised by an adult.

3. Ensure that supervising adults know CPR, just in case a drowning or submersion should occur.

4. Teach your children what to do if they see another child drowning. They should immediately call for an adult to assist

5. Ensure that toys are never left in the pool. Thus, children won’t attempt to retrieve the toys.

6. Discourage dangerous behavior in the pool.

7. Encourage children to wear safety gear, while swimming, even when there is adult supervision.

8. Take your child to swimming lessons. This does not mean that adult supervision will no longer be necessary, but will just add additional safety.
