Local chef takes the cake at cooking comp

A local chef recently won the Confectionery Showcase award at the Unilever Food Solutions Chef of the Year competition.

BAKING and beautifully decadent sweets are two primary passions of Kevyn Buys, an uMhlanga resident.

His talent and passion was vindicated at this year’s Unilever Food Solutions Chef of the Year competition, where he won the Confectionery Showcase award.

On Tuesday, 11 September, Buys, who is a lecturer at the Capsicum Culinary Studio, won R7 000 for his delicious rose petal infused four-tier cake with beautiful bead decorations, after a bake-off with five fellow confectionery chefs at the Unilever kitchens in La Lucia Ridge.

Buys, who was thrilled and humbled by the prestigious achievement said that he had experienced some ‘stiff competition from his opponents. “It wasn’t an easy win. They all had some amazing creations, but I think it was the uniqueness of my creation that made the difference. Two tears had carrot and red velvet cakes with cream cheese icing, another was a chocolate cake with chocolate mouse and the top tear had vanilla chiffon cake with rose water infused crème patissiere,” he said.

The husband and father of two, decided that he wanted to pursue a career as a chef when he was 14 years old. “I think my love of baking started with my grandmother. I use to always help her bake cookies or cake on a Saturday morning,” he said. Buys aspires to one day open his own shop where he can continue to create beautiful and delicious treats.
