uMhlanga’s Pam bowls to victory

There's no stopping Northlands Bowling Club member Pam Wolstenholme.

FOR uMhlanga’s Pam Wolstenholme, an afternoon playing lawn bowls is an exercise in having one’s assumptions dismantled. It’s not a sport just for the elderly, she tells Northglen News. “It’s a more challenging sport than people think. It’s a game of skill and tactical acumen. You have to play the game to understand it.”

Her passion for the game and her considerable skill has made her an audience favourite at Northlands Bowling Club. She recently won the Northlands Bowling Club ladies singles title for the sixth time, securing her third back to back title.

If that wasn’t enough she also scooped the Champions of Champions cup which saw her beat out competition from clubs around the region. It was also Wolstenholme’s second title, following her last win which came six years ago.

“I’m proud and humbled by my successes. Of course there’s always an element of striving to win in any competition but I was playing for passion. Winning was the cherry on the top. The Northlands Bowling Club family have overwhelmingly supportive which is always a fantastic plus,” she said.

Pam, who is now taking a course in coaching, said she had one bit of advice for those interested in playing lawn bowls.

“Don’t wait till you retire to play,” she laughed.
