Once dilapidated grounds, now lush and healthy

Greenwood Park sports ground on the mend.

THE last time Northglen News visited the Workington Road sports ground, it was in a severe state of disrepair. The grounds had all of its electrical cables stolen, no running water, a less than functional fence with missing concrete slabs and sanitation facilities which have been vandalised.

Four soccer clubs, Greenwood Park Friends, Neighbours United, New Orleans and Effingham Sporting who used the ground as their home base, had to train and play their homes games away from the dilapidated grounds. But after several meetings with the municipality over a five month period, the grounds are now sporting a lush green field, a fully functioning sprinkler system and the sanitation facilities which have been restored.

The club’ s pleaded to the municipality for control of the facilities and were granted that recently. Chairman of Greenwood Park Friends Angus Abrahams said he was thrilled to be in charge of the grounds.

“This is just fantastic for the community and for the clubs. We take pride in what little Greenwood Park and to finally be in charge of the upkeep of the grounds is great. We recently discovered a sprinkler system which we’ve connected up. We’ve repaired all the toilets which are now working all at our own costs.

“The soccer field, after a month of treatment is now in super condition, the grass is lush and green. We expect to be able to play our homes games here again in about a month’s time,” Abrahams said. He thanked the municipality’s parks department for their help in handing over custodianship of the grounds.
