La Lucia boat robbers arrested

Men wanted in connection with spate of thefts in the area arrested.

THREE La Lucia men have been arrested by police for allegedly stealing a luxuary boat from an underground parking lot in Prestondale on Tuesday. The boat valued at R250 000 was discovered at their Shelbourne Avenue home along with a trailer valued at R50 000, also stolen from Meridian Drive this week.

Police believe the men are connected to a spate of truck battery thefts from construction sites around uMhlanga.

Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS said the men used a red Smart car, as well as a white BMW with a towbar to carry out the thefts.

“The men initially stole the boat from an underground parking lot and snapped the chain wrapped around the boat with a bolt cutter. The men were seen fleeing with the boat towed to the back of the BMW.

“A day later they stole a trailer from a home in Meridian Drive but were disrupted by an alert security guard. The men abandoned the red Smart car and took off with BMW and trailer attached,” he said.

They returned a few hours later, unaware that police lay in wait. They made a run for it and a short chase ensued. They were eventually stopped and arrested on the M4. They are due to appear in court on Monday.

Both cars were legitimately owned by the suspects.

The smart car was used in both robberies.
