No arrests made in vagrant fire feud

The vagrants involved in the spat on Tuesday were allegedly fighting over stolen liquor.

POLICE have confirmed that no arrests were made after Virginia vagrants torched each other’s shacks on Tuesday, 2 September.

It was also confirmed that the blaze, started in the the bushes between the M4 and the Virginia Runway, was the result of a verbal altercation between the vagrants. “The vagrants claimed that an argument ensued after one vagrant had stolen another’s alcohol,” said Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS.

The argument between the two vagrants became so heated that the men resorted to torching each other’s shacks. Witnesses claimed that the fire was “quite big” and quickly destroyed the roughly build homes.

The fire also spread to the piles of rubbish strewn along the bushes. Residents reported that they spotted the smoke from approximately a kilometre away.

Jimmy Hollows, of the Greenwood Park CPF, was in the area at the time of the incident and responded to the scene. “I spotted the smoke from Lindsay Drive, and thought it might be a car that was on fire. When I arrived I saw that the shacks were burning,” he said.

Although the structures were completely consumed no one was injured during the blaze. “The vagrants are a big problem in most areas, but this was a particularly disgusting mess,” said Hallows.

“When police arrived on scene the vagrants were still caught up in their argument. There was not physical altercation,” said Deokaran. Police calmed the situation and chased the vagrants from the area.
