uMhlanga Ice Bucket Challenge raises thousands

Residents raise more than R2 000 for Joost vd Westhuizen's J9 Foundation in uMhlanga ice bucket challenge.

THE Ice Bucket Challenge gone viral on social media, has lured thousands of people across the world, hundreds of celebrities, has sparked millions of donations to ALS research and raised awareness of the disease.

Now a group of Durban North and uMhlanga residents have accepted the challenge and done their bit for the global movement.

For those not in the know, the ice bucket challenge involves dumping a bucket of ice water on your head to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and encourage donations to research.

Durban North resident Kelvyn Davidson and 13 others completed their ice bucket challenge outside The George in uMhlanga and collectively raised and donated R2 300 for the Joost vd Westhuizen’s J9 Foundation.

“There was a bunch of friends that were cynical about the people doing the challenge for attention , posting videos on social media and not donating to the cause, so we decided to put a twist on the challenge. We set up a Facebook event and invited people to sit together and enjoy a catch up.

“We had a couple beers and laughed and at the same time we made a difference by donating to our own local sporting legend’s foundation, keeping it proudly south African,” he explained.

Davidson urged Northglen News readers to take up the challenge and donate to a good cause.
