Hitting the right notes

NGN talks to the Northwood School Circle of Valor winners for music. arts and culture award.

WITH their unique sound the local quartet of Brad Klynsmith, Hardus de Beer, Jono Rich and Josh Klynsmith who make up the Durban band Gangs of Ballet, are leaving their mark on the music front both locally and beyond. 

The band recently won the MTV Africa Music Award (MAMA) for best alternative. They have been nominated for six South African Music Award and won for best engineer and they were also the winners of the best newcomer award at the MK Awards night. Three of the local lads, Jono and brothers Josh and Brad went to Northwood School are this years Circle of Valour Music, Art and Culture award winners. 

“You never set out with the idea of achieving awards, you just do what you love as best you can. So to be receiving an award for living our dreams feels a little weird, but we are super grateful. It’s a massive honour. I think apart from everything it gives us a huge vote of confidence that we are on the right track. We only hope to keep doing our school proud,” Jono said. 

The Klynsmith brothers who live in Durban North said their musical safari has been the highlight of their career so far.

“We’ve been privileged to have many incredible experiences in a very short time, from having number ones on the radio and iTunes to having our music videos playlisted on American TV and playing in front of 30 000 people. It has been a fantastic journey so far,” Brad said.
