Shootout criminals were casing out bank

Police believe the men arrested after a shootout on Umhlanga Rocks Drive on Friday may have been watching the bank.

ONE of the three men arrested after the shoot out that rocked Umhlanga Rocks Drive earlier today was staking out a bank. It’s believed the men were at the bank doing reconnaissance. The men who were allegedly armed with a pistol and an AK47 assault rifle, were waiting in a charcoal grey Hyundai i20 outside Standard Bank near Gateway when they were spotted by cops in an unmarked police vehicle from the Durban North Field Unit.

“We have had cases in the past where criminals use spotters in banks. They are on the lookout for people who make large withdrawals and they either follow them home or rob them outside the bank.  At this point we believe one of the suspects was sussing out customers in the bank as it was the end of the month,” Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station said.

Deokaran added the men were well dressed which may have given them an air of respectability once inside the bank.
