Designer handbag worth 40K stolen at Gateway

Never leave your handbag unattended in a trolley warns SAPS .

A DESIGNER bag worth thousands was stolen off a shoppers trolley at Gateway on Saturday. The white Chanel bag along with a cellphone, cash and purse totaling R70 000 were snatched off the trolley’s flip up child seat.

The would be thief had managed to snatch the designer handbag worth an estimated R40 000 and make off with it in seconds. According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, theft from trolleys are not an uncommon phenomenon.

“Thieves are just getting bolder, but whatever the reason it is important to be more diligent about your belongings. During the school holidays we had a spike in the number of cases but it’s not uncommon.

Over the past weekend two cases were reported.

Deokaran added there was never a 100-percent guarantee to stop this type of crime but there were things shoppers can do to reduce their chances of being robbed.

“Never leave your handbag unattended in a trolley. A thief could be watching you, just waiting for you to become momentarily distracted which presents the perfect opportunity to grab your valuables without you knowing,” he warned.
