Spokesman for the security company, Tyron Powell said the bike thief tried to run away when he spotted a patrol car approaching.

“When the man spotted our patrol car in Riverside Road he dropped the bike, ran towards the uMngeni River and swam across to escape from our officers,” Powell said.

The recovered bicycle is a GIANT: XTC JR 1 24, child mountain bike, that is worth up to R3 465 according to cycling magazine, Bicycling.

But cases of theft of high-end bikes according to the Durban North police is spiraling out of control.

Spokesman for the station, Lt Raymond Deokaran,  said criminals are on the lookout expensive bikes: “There seems to be a demand for bicycles, so it’s safe to assume there is a syndicate operating in the area. Someone must be buying the stolen bicycles.”

In July, Durban North SAPS reported that there had been a significant increase in mountain bike thefts in the Durban North area.
