Putting their best feet forward for Beachwood Nature Reserve

Residents urged to get involved in Varsity College's fund-raiser for the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve.

EDUCATING and creating awareness among residents about the importance of Beachwood Mangroves is one of the key messages at this year’s Varsity College Fun Run/Walk on 23 August. With the largest population of mangrove trees in Durban, the reserve’s importance cannot be underestimated.

With that in mind, Varsity College Durban North have made it one of their missions to raise funds for the reserve and the educational centre which was burned to the ground by vandals earlier this year. Fatima Naidu, student relations manager at the college said she was devastated when she heard the news earlier this year.

“One of the facets at VC Durban North is raising awareness about environmental sustainability and helping to reduce our carbon footprint on the ecosystem. The KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife Honorary Officers dedicated so much of their time to the mangroves and we felt we had to do something to give back to them.

“We decided the fun run/walk would give residents around Durban an opportunity to experience the natural beauty and diversity of the reserve. This is for a fantastic cause and all funds collected will be donated to the honorary officers to help rebuild the centre,” she explained.

There are three race options on the day, the 5km and 10km beach walk and the 10km trail run.

Entries cost R50 and residents can visit www.roag.co.za to enter online.
