Leave politics to the politicians

The province’s premier, Senzo Mchunu told delegates who gathered at a two-day conference at Sibaya today that they must focus on service delivery.

GOVERNMENT officials who gathered at Sibaya today were given a tongue lashing by the province’s premier when he said: “I want to caution senior public servants against getting involved in party political matters during official working hours.”

Senzo Mchunu said that once public servants were elected into senior positions they became vulnerable and “in the process government becomes vulnerable”.
“We call upon civil servants to desist from using valuable government time to debate politics. That is the space for politicians. Those who want to get involved in politics must leave government and be involved in politics fulltime.”

He said the purpose of convening the conference was to answer one question only: “As senior public servants do we have the right attitude, the capacity and ethical standards required to respond to the aspirations of the millions of the people of KwaZulu-Natal who voted on 7 May?.”

He said instability would result if the hopes of people were eroded. This, according to Mchunu would have disastrous consequences. “I am sure all of you have seen in other parts of the world where there has been a total collapse of governments as a result of uprisings. Eroding the hope about the future of our province and our people may in the long term result in instability, which we can ill afford.”
