Mourners pay tribute to uMhlanga pilot

Family pay tribute to Cameron Dalziel in an emotional memorial service at Virginia Airport.

HUNDREDS of mourners packed the Starlite Aviation hangar at Virginia Airport this morning to pay their respects to former uMhlanga resident and pilot, Cameron Dalziel. The 43-year-old was on board the Malaysian Airline MH17 that was shot down near the village of Grabovo, Ukraine, just two weeks ago.

Portraits of Dalziel (43) dotted the main stage where his younger brother, Campbell led an emotional tribute to his ‘blue eyed brother’ with The Hollies song ‘He aint heavy he’s my brother’ accompanying the photos.

Family members, including Dalziel’s wife Reine, sons Sheldon (15) and Cruz (4) wept openly as pictures flashed on the projector. Campbell recounted the story of his brother introducing him to his wife.

“It was here at Starlite that he met her and we were walking up to her and he looked over me and said my brother she is the one. His greatest creation were his boys, he was so proud of you Sheldon,” Campbell said as he broke down.

His hands and voice shook as he tried to regain his composure.

“Cameron had a simple motto in life, and that was to enjoy everything to the fullest and never forget to laugh. The amount of people here today shows how many peoples lives he touched and I thank you for your support and love shown,” he said.

He ended the memorial service saying, “Today we pray for Cameron and every family caught up in this terrible tragedy.”
