A BABY bush buck (yearling) was left for dead on the side of the road after a motorist hit the buck and drove off at a popular golf estate in Mt Edgecombe.
Fortunately for the yearling, another motorist stopped and rushed the injured animal to a local vet.
Dee Bennion, who works at the vet, but does not want to name the practice, said a witness travelling behind the motorist saw him run over the baby buck, that was crossing the road with its mother in the estate.
Bennion said the witness saw the driver get out his car, saw it was badly injured, and climbed back into his car and simply drove off.
“Had someone not seen what happened, the baby buck would just have been left to die a very painful and lingering death. Both its back legs have been shattered. Some time back, a mature bush buck was also hit by a speeding car and was found in the garden of one of the properties with a broken hind leg, that was consequently shot,” she said.
She said in another recent incident a resident of the same golf estate was seen to ‘deliberately drive onto, and park on top of a large beautiful pregnant house snake’.
“Something definitely needs to be done. Either remove all the wildlife from the estate, or remove anyone that is not sticking to road rules or found blatantly injuring the wildlife, and blacklisted from any similar estates from then on,” Bennion added.
