Claude and Trish take top honours in winter challenge

uMhlanga Tourism Winter Trail Run and Walk a resounding success says organiser.

THE cold front could not keep 325 trail runners and walkers away from participating in this year’s uMhlanga Tourism Winter Trail Run and Walk.

This year’s event was no different with the evergreen Claude Eksteen taking top honours alongside a new face on the female podium, Trish Bahlmann. Race organiser Buzz Bolton said he was thrilled with the turnout and explained the thinking behind the different race options on the day.

“The 6km route attracted a number of scholars and beginners to this growing sport. The 12km route was designed to satisfy those who would be looking for some moderate challenges and a small degree of technicality. The greater contest was the 18km that incorporated some single track and sandy roads.

“As usual all three trails ended with a beach slog back to the finish outside Cotton Fields. Thankfully the tide was low which allowed runners in particular to use the firmer sand near the waters edge. Life guards from the Bronze Beach Club were on standby to assist any participant having difficulty crossing the out flowing lagoon,” he said.
