Madiba spirit alive and well in Durban North

Northglen News caught up with a few of the volunteers on Mandela Day to find out what the internationally recognised day meant to them.

UNITY, hope, change, and helping those less fortunate than you were a few of the dominant themes at this year’s Mandela Day celebrations. This was especially true for the Domino Foundation and the hundreds of volunteers who helped put together hampers at the four action stations set up by the NPO. The Hampers put together on the day will be distributed to the foundation’s various programmes.

Tahika Dookie, who celebrated her birthday on Friday, said she had decided with her sisters and mom to give back to the community.

“It’s important for children to give back and continue Madiba’s legacy of change. We come from a privileged background and today is about helping others and lending a helping hand,” she said.

The Domino Foundation’s Sandy Hamblin (volunteer manager) said she was thrilled with the number of residents and companies who volunteered their time for such a worthy cause.

“The multi pronged approach has certainly helped this year and we are thrilled with the number of new volunteers who spent their 67 minutes helping at one of the action stations. This has also helped spread the word on what the Domino Foundation does in the Durban North community,” she said.
