Taxi driver arrested after brawl with cyclist in uMhlanga

Heated argument leads to taxi driver arrest and attempted murder charge.

A MINIBUS taxi driver has been arrested after trying to run over an uMhlanga cyclist on Herrwood Drive. The scene unfolded on Tuesday morning along the busy road in what appears to be a road rage incident, which ended in an attempted murder charge.

According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North station, the cyclist felt he was almost taken out by the taxi. When the driver stopped, the infuriated cyclist confronted him and an argument ensued.

“The cyclist then broke one of the windows off the taxi and attempted to ride off. The taxi driver jumped back into his vehicle and drove after him. He then mounted the pavement in an attempt to run the cyclist over. Thankfully though there was no collision.

The cyclist then opened a case of attempted murder at the Durban North SAPS and was promptly followed by the taxi driver who laid a counter charge for malicious damage to property.

The driver was arrested and is due to appear later this week.

Deokaran warned motorists against driving aggressively and to beware of other aggressive drivers.  “Road users all have a responsibility to cool the emotional temperature on the roads,” he said.
