City declares war on water leaks

The city has taken action to curb the severe water leaking problem

THE city wants to promote its water leak call centre aimed at getting residents to report the escalating problem of burst pipes if spotted in their area.

Residents from around eThekwini region are encouraged to use the call centre to report any water leaks or burst pipes. The city said that a massive 39 per cent of clean water was lost due to water leaks. In January, the Auditor General reported that the municipality’s water loss stood at R513m.

The most worrying area for the city is the INK (Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu) area that lies next to the north Durban suburbs. They have been cited as having “severe problems with leakages” the city said in a statement.

They have now declared a war on leaks, and plan on spending R250 million per year on construction and activities to improve the pipelines for water supply.

Included in the city’s plan is the campaign; “War on Leaks”, run by its Water and Sanitation Unit to encourage residents in INK to call the call centre to report any leaks. Last month the Northglen News reported on pipe that had burst five times in a space of four weeks.

To report leaks or burst pipes, call 080 1313 013.
