SAA passengers, crew injured in turbulence scare

Twenty people injured in severe turbulence over Malaysian capital.

AN SAA flight destined for Hong Kong experienced severe turbulence, resulting in 17 passengers and three crew members being injured, South African Airways (SAA) said on Wednesday.

SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali said flight SA286, which departed from Johannesburg on Tuesday afternoon, bound for Hong Kong, experienced severe turbulence injuring some passengers and crew.

“SA286 landed safely in Hong Kong today [Wednesday], at approximately 6:30am SA time (12:30pm Hong Kong time),” he said.

A total of 165 passengers were on board.

“The crew of the flight immediately requested medical assistance for the passengers, which was arranged and ready on arrival of the aircraft in Hong Kong,” said Tlali.

The national carrier requested medical and trauma assistance which are now attending to the passengers and crew members.

The incident occurred while flying over the Kuala Lumpur airspace.
