Allan Hirsch, cooking up a storm

Win your copy of A Taste of Hirsch's.

THE Hirsch family has been prolific in the creation of recipe books over the years, and this year it was Allan’s turn to bring out his culinary skills and put together his own recipe book in conjunction with culinary whizz and family friend, Vanessa de Beer.

The book – A Taste of Hirsch’s, is beautifully illustrated by professional photographer, Samantha Maber and contains a wonderful mix of recipes from Allan’s youth, his travels around the world, and family meals. “We try to spend as much time together as a family and our Sunday lunches are something very special,” said Allan.

The recipe book contains various offerings including, for breakfast, the hugely healthy home-made fibre-rich granola as well as a delightful, spicey midday meal that Allan has called Smokey Brinjal. You can also learn how to cook a Cashew nut curry or the vibrant Mediterranean Salmon tray bake. Then there’s the family’s favourite chocolate mousse meringue to round things off – or Allan’s baked blackberry (or mulberry) cheesecake and a lot more, all with careful thought put towards the ingredients and the health giving aspects of the dishes as a whole.

“The most obvious thing is to know which foods are right for you, taking advantage of what the food offers. This can keep you energised all day long,” says Allan.
Vanessa, who collaborated with Allan in this culinary journey said: “Food builds strong friendships and creates love and happiness. The best of camaraderie and community is formed around food and lifestyle and it is for this reason that I have loved working on this cookery book for Allan. He is an amazing friend and family man!”
