Major set back for passionate cat rescuer

Feral Cat Rescue Trust has put out a plea for help after rescuer Doug Fairall's bakkie was stolen.

A DURBAN NORTH’s man mission to rescue feral cats was dealt a major blow on Saturday, 12 July when his bakkie was stolen. Passionate cat rescuer, Doug Fairall said his Nissan bakkie (ND217320) was stolen while he was on a rescue work in the Mayville area.

Fairall, who volunteers at Feral Cat Rescue Trust, said he was repairing a few of his traps in the area when he was targeted. According to Fairall the vehicle was his only way of getting to the 15 spots in Durban every evening to feed several colonies of feral cats.

In his bakkie was also his only net and catch pole which he used to nab the feral cats. Now the theft of the bakkie has crippled the operation that has seen homes found for more than 4 000 cats. More than 30 cats are housed at Fairall’s home in Durban North.

The feral cat situation in Durban and surrounding areas has become overwhelming for Fairall who volunteers at Feral Cat Rescue.
