Glynnis Breytenbach addresses Durban North residents

DA held a meeting at the Northwood Crusader's Sports Club, ahead of the bi-elections.

AHEAD of the municipal by-elections, to be held on Wednesday, 2 July, the DA has pulled in newly elected member of parliament, and top prosecutor,  Glynnis Breytenbach, to cajole Durban North residents to vote for her party’s candidate.

Their candidate is Shaun Ryley and Breytencach who recently resigned from the National Prosecution Authority (NPA), spoke on the country’s infamous struggle with crime at Northwood Crusader’s Sports Club last night.

Breytenbach hit the headlines in 2012 when she was suspended from the NPA and later faced a lengthy disciplinary hearing on 15 charges, all of which she was found not guilty of. But last night the former NPA heavyweight told dozens of Durban North residents that to retain the strategic Durban North ward (36), they would have to fight the crime that’s gripped the country.  According to Breytenbach the DA plans to re- implement the specialised units that were lost following the 1994 elections, and they are focusing on improving the competency of policemen.

She also said that the party would be “exploring” the rehabilitation process of criminals.
Ryley said the efforts made by community based organisations such as CPFs and neighbourhood watches were paramount in fighting crime. “That is the first step to combating crime,” Ryley added.

He urged residents to vote next week, saying, “We need everybody’s support. The ANC has made noise about the fact that they intend to take the ward,” he said.
