City urges residents to cut electricity usage

eThekwini Municipality may implement load shedding after Eskom loses more power.

PARTS of Durban North spent their Tuesday evening in total darkness after eThekwini Municipality implemented stage one of the load shedding schedule.

Residents reported that the power went off at 5pm and was restored again at 7.30pm, although the schedule said La Lucia, which is broken up into block B and block C, would be without power from 2pm to 4.30pm (block B) and 4pm to 6.30pm (block C).

On Tuesday afternoon the municipality released a statement saying Eskom announced a load reduction alert nationally after losing a further 600MW on the system. This was to be enforced immediately until 9pm on Tuesday night, 17 June.

eThekwini Municipality urged customers to switch off all non-essential appliances during this period in an attempt to avoid rotational load shedding.

In the statement the municipality said should it become necessary to implement load-shedding, eThekwini will enact stage one of the load shedding schedule.

They have urged customers to switch off all appliances during the power outage to minimise the risk of overload tripping on the waiting load.
